In Remembrance of Lita Grey

Lita Grey came into her family’s life in October of 2025 through Homeward Animal Shelter. From that point forward, she was loved without promise of many years ahead, but as a hospice adoption: a deliberate, compassionate choice to offer comfort, dignity, and companionship in the twilight of her life. On December 12, 2025, she was formally adopted, though in truth, she had already been chosen in the ways that matter most.

Lita Grey moved through her days with a composed grace that seemed almost instructional. She left a calming presence in her wake wherever she roamed. Though she had only four teeth, leaving her tongue perpetually peeking out, she was courageous and curious. Her ever-so-slightly open mouth was an endearing detail that often came with a bit of drool, but always left a smile on the faces of those who loved her. It was a small, visible reminder that bodies can be fragile and still be utterly charming, still be worthy of tenderness without qualification.

There are few honors that rank higher than being chosen by a cat, and Lita Grey made that choice with quiet, but direct intention. It took her less than a week to decide that Steve’s lap was safe, suitable, and worthy of trust. When she finally settled there, it felt like a small ceremony: a lap worthy should be celebrated. The ceremonial anointing of laps soon expanded to include every available warm human in the house. Lita showed us, then, that she accepted our home as her place. She spent the rest of her days moving through our lives as though we had always been hers;  we accepted the gift with gratitude.

She also claimed another simple joy: sleeping on a pillow. A simple act of choosing comfort and safety. Her selection was often close enough to remind the world that comfort and luxury are sometimes best found in shared stillness. Lita Grey did not come into this home to be saved; she came to allow herself to be cared for. In that reversal, she offered something profound: a reminder of letting others tend to you when you cannot.

She made space for devotion, for gentleness practiced daily, for the quiet work of ensuring that a life was calm and comfortable. Wonder Woman, our energetic and loving family dog shared a mutual, respectful acknowledgment with Lita, a small but meaningful recognition between companions. Our home was made whole, as Lita reminded all of us (even Wonder Woman) of the space that tranquility should hold in our lives.

Her name carried a story. Given “Lita” by the wonderful team at the shelter, her family considered whether to change it. While we pondered, a discovery was made: Lita Grey, star of the silent screen and the wife of Charlie Chaplin seems to fit. Lita Grey, the grey cat, would keep her name that brought a touch of old-world grace rarely recaptured in the world today. The name matched the aesthetic and the warmth of memories from days long past.

She was here, with us, for too short of a time. She was loved completely. And that, in the end, is a very full life indeed.
