In Loving Memory of Emmit Smith
Emmit Smith was known by many names — Em‑Em, Mit, Mitmas, Emlet, and simply, Emmit. He entered Samantha’s life when she was a sophomore in college, settling into her first apartment and needing a companion. On a small farm near Downer, MN, she found two five‑week‑old kittens. Shadow went to her forever home, and Emmit stayed — the beginning of a lifelong bond.
Together, they navigated new homes, and new chapters. He made the trip many times, riding shotgun either curled in her lap or perched on the dash or rear window. It wasn’t the safest arrangement, but he was the most precious cargo she had. The family grew: Bosston arrived, and while unimpressed, Emmit tolerated the role of big brother. Eventually Jeff came into Emmit’s life and proudly became “Dad.” Luna joined the family, and later Boone the dog.
If you were looking for Emmit, the search was never difficult. He was almost always with his mom — tucked into her chest, sleeping on her head, or following her from room to room. That was the deal she made the day she brought him home. He even stood guard during her showers, a devoted little “purrtector.”
Emmit was a master beggar with a refined palate. Raisin Bran Crunch, yogurt, popcorn, and ice cream were favorites. He could also persuade Dad to share rotisserie chicken and cottage cheese — the sound of a container opening was always followed by the rapid pitter‑patter of Emmit racing to the kitchen.
Loving, relentless, and truly one‑in‑a‑million, Emmit never met a stranger. Guests were expected to admire his big green eyes and accept his head boops. He gave affection as freely as he demanded it.
He was also a character. Once, he slipped outside unnoticed. Whatever adventure he had that day remains a mystery, but when Mom returned home, he sat waiting at the door — unimpressed, as if to say he’d checked the world and confirmed the best place was still right there with her.
Emmit was there through joy and through deep loss. He remained steadfast through heartbreak and healing, especially for Samantha through the passing of her grandmothers and mother. For over 15 years, he was constant. He was comfort. He was home.
With gratitude to Adventure with JJ for his spa days and to Healthy Paws for their care and compassion, Emmit’s family let him go gently, wrapped in love. Those unforgettable green eyes — warm, trusting, and full of devotion — are how we will remember him.
Emmit leaves behind a life and love that will never, could never, be replaced.
